AOR: Finnish Architecture in Transition

Erkko Aarti, Arto Ollila and Mikki Ristola are three emerging architects that together form AOR, the practice behind Viewpoint in London's King's Cross. Following the success of the Viewpoint project, they have won numerous competitions both in Finland and internationally, and are certainly a name to watch.

AOR has a shared passion and vision for drawing on the context of an environment and interpreting it in a modern way. Their work embodies many features of traditional Finnish design, including the use of natural materials such as wood, yet uses them in innovative and challenging ways. They draw inspiration from the humble attitude of the Finnish people and have described Finnish architecture as simple and honest in feeling.

It appears that Finland is in a state of transition at the moment. AOR explains how there is a good atmosphere for start up companies, and plenty of opportunities for young entrepreneurs. With many architectural changes taking place in Helsinki at the moment, this shifting landscape has made the city become a vibrant and exciting place for a young designer to be.

We talk to architects about their cutting-edge designs for houses, skyscrapers and cultural buildings around the world
