Arabella Dorman: Before the Dawn

Arabella Dorman is a London-based conflict artist. Having spent time with British troops in Iraq in 2006, she was commissioned as an offical war artist for the British Army in Afghanistan, making several trips over a five year period. She has also visited of her own accord, travelling all over the country accompanied by her husband, a former filmmaker.

Dorman's paintings, some of which have been years in the making, capture the warmth, beauty, hostility and violence of a land buckling under the weight of decades of conflict and upheaval and the terrible toll on both the civilian population and the British military – though they aren't without hope.

Distorting celebrity faces gave this artist his mainstream status. Now, he's working with coal dust to create art that explores the UK Miner's Strike
