In the early days George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg would often have to sleep under their desks after a hard day at the office. Thirty years on, the Canadian designers travel the world sleeping in luxury hotels, many of which they have fitted themselves. Although the pair studied together at Ryerson Design School in Toronto, it was by chance that they bumped into each other in the same city years later.
A convenient shared studio became both a romantic and business relationship and Yabu Pushelberg have gone from working on small copy shops to designing retail spaces for fashion giants such as Louis Vuitton, Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s and the St. Regis Hotel. They were awarded the Platinum Circle Award for the work within the hospitality sector and the James Beard Foundation award for their work within restaurant design.
Their latest project at the London Edition hotel has seen them continue to collaborate with Ian Schrager (they together on the first Edition Waikiki), the legendary hotelier and co-founder of Studio 54. The next hotel to open in the EDITION series will be in Miami, in the second half of 2014, where the pair own a home that often hosts the most raucous parties at Design Miami/.
